In its first full day of screenings Wednesday, Sony’s Hancock, starring Will Smith as a drunk ass superhero, grossed $17.4 million in 3,965 theaters. Having collected an additional $6.8 million from Tuesday midnight showings in 3,680 theaters, the movie’s total from its first 1 1/2 days adds up to $24.2 million.
Those numbers suggest the movie could settle into the $90 million-$100 million range by the end of the holiday weekend. This is amazing, considering the horrible reviews the film is getting, from critics and audiences alike. Guess La Coacha’s cameo in the Hollywood scene could have something to do with it.
Hancock’s only competition this weekend are a pair of indies in limited release.
The Wackness, a 90s set comedy stars one half of the Olsen twins, Kabluey stars Teri Garr and Lisa Kudrow and deals with a man who helps his sister-in-law raise her kids while her husband fights in Iraq, and Diminished Capacity with Sarah Jessica’s husband Matthew as a journalist suffering from memory loss.
I’ll go see Wall-E, thanks.
