Hi everyone, I was in Las Vegas this weekend, for the closing of Monty Python’s Spamalot at the Wynn Hotel and Casino, so I’m a day late with my Weekly Box-Office report. Hope you didn’t get this news elsewhere.
As I expected, Hellboy II: The Golden Army opened at No. 1, taking in $35.9 million dollars. The film, which cost about $85 million to make, exceeded industry expectations, as well as the $23.2 million opening for its 2004 predecessor.
The sequel becomes the third comic-book film to lead the field this summer, following Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. But its reign will no doubt be over soon, as the highly anticipated Batman sequel The Dark Knight opens on Friday.
Last weekend’s champ, the Will Smith superhero comedy Hancock, slipped to No. 2 with $33 million, taking its 12-day total to $165 million. Journey to the Center of the Earth, yet another Branden Fraser action film, but this one filmed in 3-D, opened at No. 3 with $20.6 million, also exceeding expectations. Venues equipped with 3-D capabilities accounted for 30% of the locations, and 57% of the gross. Who the hell would want to see this if it’s not in 3-D?
Meet Dave opened at No. 7 with just $5.3 million. It ranks as Murphy’s biggest flop since The Adventures of Pluto Nash, which opened to $2.2 million in 2002. Sorry Eddie, hope you get another Dreamgirls soon, or your career will quickly go down the toilet. Beverly Hills Cop 4 will either make or break him.
