Greetings from Miami, Fred Turd the Movie Nerd here with some exciting news that could not wait until I got back to Los Angeles. My sources texted me this yesterday morning, so sorry for the delay.
John Waters confirmed yesterday that he has been asked to start work on a sequel to the musical Hairspray, which was based on the Broadway version of his 80s masterpiece.
Although director-choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are set to return for the sequel, it is unclear if anyone from the original cast are coming back, since none of the actors had sequel options in their contracts. Waters has said they are trying to get as many of the cast members as possible.
New Line hopes to be ready for release by Warner Bros. in summer 2010.
Although musical sequels have rarely worked in the past (Grease 2, High School Musical 2), I do have hopes for this one since the original crew, and Waters, are heavily involved. Plus, songs written exclusively for the film version were actually pretty good. May I suggest using some of the fabulous songs deleted from the original Broadway version, and even those deleted from the film? Hope Mamma Mia is next. Go Tracey!

Ho my god! I khope this works out…
