It’s no surprise that Disney’s High School Musical 3 debuted at the #1 spot this weekend, bringing in $42 million in three days. I’m sure Disney execs expected slightly better numbers, but this seems to be a record for an October opening.
The musical broke the 4 year winning streak of the Saw franchise, as the 5th film in the series debuted at #2, with a still hefty $30.2 milion.
Warner Bros.’ Pride and Glory, a long-gestating New Line title, debuted at No. 5 with $6.3 million.
Universal got spectacular results from 15 runs of Changeling. The Clint Eastwood-helmed pic bowed with $502,000, or $33,441 per theatre.
Logo Features, the pic arm of Viacom’s gay cable channel, also got impressive results from Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom, which pulled in $161,302 from just five screens.
