It’s no surprise that High School Musical 3 pulled in big numbers on Friday, opening with 16.5 million its opening day. The film is most likely headed for a $55M 3-day weekend. Some had this picture sailing a bit higher, but, this is still relatively huge for an October release. The HSM franchise is essentially a license for Disney to print money, and number 4 is rumored to be well on its way (on TV) next year.

Finishing a strong #2 for the day and the weekend is the latest installment of the Saw franchise. Although often imitated, this is the “gold standard” for this sort of bloody gore, and Saw V has delivered an excellent $12.3M on its opening day, and it will likely finish at $29M or so. This is only slightly down from the last 3 Saw outings.
