If it’s Halloween, it must be time for Saw…but that came out last weekend along with High School Musical 3.They should continue to rule in theaters this week. Yet if there’s one contender in theaters this weekend that might knock these two out of the top spot it’s Kevin Smith’s latest comedy, Zack and Miri Make a Porno. And if you like your horror movies rated PG-13, you might dig The Haunting of Molly Hartley starring a pair of TV up-and-comers, “Gossip Girl” guy Chace Crawford and Haley Bennet from The Riches.

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO
Opening in theaters across the land is Kevin Smith’s “Judd Apatow-style” comedy — even though some would argue Smith himself pioneered the style — combining equal parts sweetness and raunch. Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks star as platonic friends and roommates desperate for a way to pay the rent (see title of movie for a clue). R.J. Jones of the Chicago Reader writes about this odd couple comedy, “There’s a warm ‘Boogie Nights’-style vibe,” and Ethan Alter of Film Journal International says, “Leave it to big softie Kevin Smith to make the cuddliest porno flick of all time.” However, Roger Moore of the Orlando Sentinel panned the movie: “It’s a slow-footed film that confirms that Smith may never be able to lift his game to that ’40 Year Old Virgin’ level.”

THE HAUNTING OF MOLLY HARTLEY
Most girls look forward to coming of age. They get to drive a car and soon even go out on dates without dear old Dad tagging along. Molly Hartley (Haley Bennett), however, is hoping that she NEVER officially becomes an adult because legend has it that upon her 18th birthday, the devil claims her soul. It’s true, growing up can be a drag, but that’s certainly more than most teenagers have to deal with. Chace Crawford also stars as the gallant, popular guy in school, which seems to suit him. The film has not been screened for critics, but you can watch the first six minutes right here to decide for yourself.

CHANGELING
Expanding to wide release is Clint Eastwood’s historical thriller starring Angelina Jolie. The film is about Christine Collins, a devoted mother who simply would not give up hope when her son goes missing in 1920s Los Angeles. Most critics gave this shocking, true story positive reviews, like Pete Hammond of Hollywood.com who wrote, “Another Oscar-worthy masterpiece from Clint Eastwood.” Angelina’s turn also garnered enthusiastic responses from the likes of Roger Ebert of Chicago Sun-Times who said “Jolie plays Christine Collins without unnecessary angles or quirks. ” Other critics felt the film was “not one of Eastwood’s best” (Geoff Berkshire, Metromix.com) including Claudia Puig of USA Today who said, “the film should inspire strong emotion, but deliberate pacing and a contained sense of melodrama make it a surprisingly passive experience.”

ROCKNROLLA
Also going wide is a Guy Ritchie film comparable to his early efforts like “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch,” where a new batch of charismatic mobsters from London’s criminal underworld come out to play. Gerard Butler of “300″ leads the cast that includes Jeremy Piven, Ludacris, and new Bond girl Gemma Arterton. You know you’re in for a cinematic ride of car chases, wild plot twist, and indecipherable British slang. While critic James Berardinelli of Reelviews.com says it “…often feels more like a parody of a Guy Ritchie film than a real movie,” Sean O’Connell of filmcritic.com states that the film “keeps moving, hardly caring if you are keeping up.”

ALSO IN THEATRES

A few intriguing documentaries lead the array of limited release films going into theaters this weekend including Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father which starts as a sentimental personal gesture, then turns into an investigation of a completely convoluted crime. Also in select theaters is The Matador, the story of a man’s three-year quest to become the world’s top-ranked bullfighter. And just in time for the tip off of the NBA season is The First Basket which examines the early roots of basketball in NYC’s Jewish immigrant neighborhoods of the ’20s.
