Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal American holiday  commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. 

During the American Revolution, the LEGAL separation of the American colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committe of five, with Principal Author: Thomas Jefferson. 

Most delegates actually signed the Declaration on August 2, 1776 instead of July 4th. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:

“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Adams’ prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.

In a remarkable series of coincidences, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, (the two founding father of the U.S.) both died on July 4, 1826. President James Monroe died on the 4th of July as well. What a patriotic way to go!

Earlier this week, Kurvaceous Kardashian kicked off the 4th of July weekend at the Sierra Mist Beach House in Malibu. Hamburger grilling never looked sexier. Unfortunately, there are no backside snaps of her. Fortunately, we have seen enough.

Following Kevin Jonas’ proposal to girlfriend Danielle Deleasa, The Jonas Brothers were snapped having a jubilee at a pizza parlor in Los Angeles last night.

Kevin Jonas, the oldest member of The Jonas Brothers, proposed to his longtime girlfriend Danielle Deleasa Wednesday morning with a cushion-cut diamond ring from Jacob & Company. 

Kevin got on one knee after showing up unannounced at Daniella’s New Jersey home Wednesday morning. He flew in from a Tuesday night concert in Vancouver, Canada. 

“It was tough performing last night, knowing that I was going to ask the biggest question in my life to the most amazing girl in the world. She said yes, yes, yes like 500 times super fast in a row,” Kevin told PEOPLE.

A statement from Denise and Kevin Jonas, Sr. reads, “Our hearts are filled with joy today and we are happy to share with you that our son Kevin has asked Danielle for her hand in marriage… It is such a blessing that she will be joining our family”

Danielle told People magazine, “I didn’t see the ring for a while because I couldn’t believe what he just asked me. I was looking at him, like ‘Are you serious?’ When he pulled out that ring, I was like ‘Oh gosh.’ I said something like ‘Oh my God,’ and then I started crying.”

No wedding date has been set at this time…

The Queen of Pop is dedicating a special part of her concert to the King of Pop. Madonna publicist Liz Rosenberg says she is going to unveil a special song, along with a choreographed dance in honor of Jackson at today’s London O2 Arena.

Michael Jackson was to perform his comeback concerts at O2 starting July 13. He died last week at the age of 50. He had been rehearsing for those shows in his final days.

Madonna has two concerts scheduled at the O2 arena – on Saturday July 4, and Sunday July 5, according to the singer’s Web site. The O2 Arena is the same venue Michael was due to kick off his comeback shows beginning on July 13.

Madonna and Michael famously attended the Academy Awards together in 1991.

According to Britain’s Daily Mail, Sasha Fierce has been asked to play the comedic role of Deloris Van Cartier. 

The Madre Sooperior role might go to Meryl Streep. Good shoice.

Sister Act is playing at the London Palladium. The show opens on Broadway in October 2010. Beyonce’s Sister Act could debut by 2011.
