The Royal Spanish Academy will officially eliminate the letters “Ch” and “Ll” in the Spanish language. The Royal Spanish Academy (Real Academia Espanola) which is based in Madrid is the official authority responsible for regulating the Spanish language.

The Academy will be issuing new Spanish dictionaries in Spain before Christmas day (later for Mexico and Latin America). In addition to the elimination of “Ch” and “Ll” the letter Y which most Spanish speakers identify as i griega will be now be identified as “ye”. Also, many Spanish words that carry an accent such as “Olé” or “Café” will no longer carry an accent.

The Royal Spanish Academy as well as other Spanish linguists from the Spanish speaking world are making the changes to be able to unite the Spanish language under one global consensus and make it similar to English.

Don’t worry friends, Chismetime will not be changed to Ismetime and I’m sure our good friend La Coacha would not change her name to La Coaa (it just doesn’t pack the same punch) Even though “Ch” and “Ll” will be eliminated as individual letters, combination of the letters “C” “H” and “L” will still be allowed to make the “Cha” sound.

  1. THANK GOD! I always thought those letters were stupid! It’s just two letters put together!! It’s like saying this is the letter “PA” and this is the letter “LO” they were just very ridiculous letters, thank God they’re gone. I don’t agree with the accents though. How are we supposed to say it now? CAfe instead of caFE? And the accents are what make Spanish so beautiful when it’s written, I don’t know, to conform with English just doesn’t cut it in my book.

  2. I thought they’ve been eliminated since  long time ago. I never considered as single consonnants, when I was child I thought that was gramatically wrong, but in the dictionaries appeared the letter CH and the LL, just cause they sound different than the combination with other consonnants. Whatever, many people no longer consider so. And I’m surprised they wait until today for doing this.

  3. yeah this has been known for a long time hasn’t it?
    Good to know though.

  4. WTF ???? isn’t there anything more interesting to do than CHANGE la lengua latina carajos!!???
