After weeks of heavy marketing, Sony’s Playboy-based comedy The House Bunny, starring Anna Faris from the Scary Movie franchise, finally hops its way into theaters today.

The week’s other new release is the gory Death Race starring Jason Statham, who tends to be popular with female filmgoers, and shows appeal among prospective urban moviegoers.

Smaller releases include The Longshots, a family football comedy starring Ice Cube and Keke Palmer, directed by rocker-turned-helmer Fred Durst. Fox’s The Rocker, the Rainn Wilson-starring comedy unspooled Wednesday to stimulate additional word-of-mouth, but its first-day tally was just $600,000.
Notable limited releases this weekend include exclusive engagements for Focus Features’ comedy Hamlet 2. The gambit aims to stimulate positive word-of-mouth before wide expansion of the Steve Coogan/Catherine Keener film over the long Labor Day frame.
While Faris seems destined to take the #1 spot, the overperforming The Dark Knight can fall somewhere in the #4 or #5 spot this weekend.
