Mexico’s immigration service is under scrutiny due to the recent lawsuit of an Australian immigrant who had an expired Visa while living in Acapulco. This is the first time a migrant has sued the National Immigration Institute (Instituto Nacional de Migracion).  

The plaintiff, Stephen Compton argues that he has suffered economic, psychological and other damages. He also argues that because he is gay, he was separated from other amenities such as showers and telephones that were offered to other detainees.  

According to Mr. Compton “ They gave me no official explanation on my detention.” The Mexican migrant rights group, Sin Fronteras, is helping Mr. Compton in his legal battle. The lawsuit is another hit of negative criticisms regarding the INM, Mexican authorities have been accused of abusing undocumented immigrants from Guatemala crossing into Mexico.  In some cases, some even kidnapped by Mexican gangs for ransom. Since this is the first lawsuit of its kind, the INM has not made any statements in response to the allegations.
