Mudslide in Mexico

(Story by Eric Elizondo)

Early Tuesday morning, between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., a mountainslide in Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca, Mexico broke away and swept with it homes and families. The constant rain, fog, and mudslides are preventing help from arriving quickly. At the moment there is no electricity or phone service so it is hard to keep track of all that is going on.

Bad weather and roads damaged by earlier mudslides are keeping emergency rescue teams from reaching the residents trapped in an early morning mudslide. The mudslide caused by heavy rains from Hurricane Karl which passed through southern Mexico last week followed by Tropical Storm Matthew, downgraded to a tropical depression which dumped more rain on an already saturated southern Mexico.

The number of casualties has been changing throughout the day, the least being zero and the highest going into the hundreds. early speculation of a possible death toll mentioned perhaps 1,000 dead — only a handful of people were even confirmed as missing by Tuesday evening.
